Siemens plc chooses Barking & Dagenham College to deliver advanced engineering apprenticeships
September 2013 saw the first intake of 10 employees from Siemens plc onto a full-time advanced apprenticeship programme in Electrical/Electronic Engineering.
The apprentices, who are employed in maintenance and engineering roles at Siemens Rail Automation (formerly Invensys Rail) and Siemens’ customer, Poulten Graf, are studying full-time at Barking & Dagenham College (BDC) in the first year, switching to two days a week in the second year. During the breaks in the college year, the apprentices return to work.
BTEC Level 3 qualifications and HNC
Nine of the employees are working towards a BTEC Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering at Level 3, whilst one member of the group is studying for a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Engineering, which will be completed within a year.
Tailored for Siemens
The course content and equipment has been tailored by BDC to meet the needs of Siemens plc. BDC has invested in specialist Siemens equipment, including their programmable logic controllers, on which the apprentices will receive training.
Martin Hottass, Manager, Skills & Learning Governance at Siemens plc commented on the relationship with BDC, saying:
“Siemens only works with truly excellent partners to deliver skills and knowledge to our apprentices – Barking & Dagenham College is our partner in London.”
